Fish treats for dogs

Fish is a different protein source than beef or chicken, which is why it is often a good choice for dogs that do not tolerate those meats well. In this category you will find all treats with fish, from crunchy fish skin to soft frikandels.

Which fish treat suits your dog?

  • Fish skin: salmon, cod, redfish and catfish skin, see also our fish skin.
  • Whole fish: sprat, roach and plaice, dried.
  • Fish fingers and cubes: of cod, trout, mackerel, salmon or tuna.
  • Frikandels and sausage with fish: with fish collagen, herring or mackerel.

Fish treats smell of fish, so preferably give them outside or on a mat. Read more in our knowledge base: how many treats can a dog have per day. Order before 1 pm on a working day and it ships today.

Short answer: A fish treat suits your dog when its shape and size match what you want to use it for: fish skin and whole fish for chewing, frikandellen, cubes and sticks for rewarding. Fish is a good protein source for many dogs. If your dog has an allergy, choose a treat made only from fish, as some varieties also contain chicken or rice. Give them under supervision, in a suitable size and within the 10 per cent rule.

What are fish treats for dogs?

Fish treats are dried or baked treats in which fish takes centre stage. Some are single-ingredient, such as Canis Zalmhuid. Others are made from several ingredients, such as Canis Frikandellen Kabeljauw (Vis Collageen) or Canis Soft Bone met Zalm en Rijst. Fish naturally contains omega-3 fatty acids. How much a treat contains varies by type and by batch, so always go by the label. This collection also includes fish oil and kibble with fish. These are not treats. You can also find oil under supplements and oil.

Which fish treat suits my dog?

Start by thinking about what you want to use the treat for.

  • For training: choose something small and soft, such as Canis Mini Sticks met Vis, Canis Cubes Tonijn or Canis Take & Break met Vis. You'll find more choice among the training treats.
  • For chewing: fish skin snaps crisply and is gone quickly. If you're looking for something to keep your dog busy for longer, take a look at the chews.
  • As a snack between meals: Canis Mini Botje Zalm or Canis Frikandellen met Zalm. Long-life sausage can be cut into slices.
  • For a sensitive stomach: choose a single protein source. Canis Houdbare Worst Kip & Zalm and Canis Houdbare Worst Kip & Makreel also contain chicken.

Are fish treats safe for dogs?

Yes, as long as you get a few things right. Choose a size your dog can't swallow in one go and stay with them while they eat. Dried whole fish contain small bones. These are brittle, but still only give them under supervision and take away the last small piece. Never give cooked fish with bones from your own plate. Fish treats are much softer than antlers or hooves, so the risk of a broken tooth is lower. Always put out fresh water. To find out what is and isn't sensible, read which chews are safe for dogs.

Ingrid's tip: If you're trying a new fish treat, start with the smallest pack and give only that one new treat for a few days. That way you can see calmly whether your dog likes it and tolerates it well before you buy a bigger pack.

How many fish treats can you give?

All treats combined should provide no more than about 10 per cent of your dog's daily energy intake. Fish can be high in fat, especially salmon and mackerel, and frikandellen and sausage are more nourishing than they look. If you give a lot on one day, during a training session for example, give a little less of the main food. Break larger treats into small pieces: what matters most to your dog is that they get something.

How do you store fish treats?

Keep them dry, cool and sealed, for example in a tin with a tight-fitting lid. That keeps them crispy and limits the fishy smell. Once opened, store long-life sausage as directed on the label. Wash your hands after giving treats.

Frequently asked questions

Is fish suitable for a dog with a food allergy?

Beef, dairy and chicken are mentioned more often than fish as sources of food allergy, but a dog can react to fish too. Introduce one treat at a time and see your vet if symptoms appear. Read more in grain-free dog treats and allergies.

Can puppies have fish treats?

Yes, soft pieces and a small piece of fish skin are a good start. Give small portions and stay with them. What's suitable at each age is explained in from what age can a puppy have chews.

My dog swallows fish skin almost whole. What now?

Choose a bigger piece and hold on to it while your dog chews. If that doesn't work, give a soft treat in small pieces instead.

Does a fish treat replace fish oil?

No, a fish treat is a reward, not a supplement. If you want to top up omega-3 fatty acids on a regular basis, ask your vet whether fish oil is suitable.
